Right away, I have to say I enjoy both. However, at this particular time neither one can just plain win. I mean, we're talking about two of the best FPS franchises ever. So really it's all opinion based. So here's the run down...
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
We finally received a reveal trailer from Infinity Ward, and it looks promising. But, and there is always a but, it's not enough to know how the game will play or how the environment will act. We've heard rumors that although the game engine is the same from Modern Warfare 2, enhancements have been made... to include destructible environments? What? That sounds a lot like Battlefield to us. Still, this isn't truly confirmed. There's not a lot we can go by, especially when it comes to multiplayer. We just have to hope that Infinity Ward releases the multiplayer videos like they did before. For campaign, we don't know the length. However, the hint that it's now World War III is going to make for an incredible story.
Battlefield 3
This is not another Battlefield spin-off, but a true full fledged Battlefield; complete with full updated overhauled game engine. Battlefield looks good and if you haven't seen... look up the 12 minute gameplay footage. Again, we don't see anything from multiplayer, but we know what can be expected for sure, even without confirmation. Such items include destructible buildings and the ability to go prone. Yep, Dice brought prone back and they're not just gonna shove it in there either. They're actually thinking about counters to hiding snipers. Last, but not least, a claim has been confirmed for Battlefield 3 holding a whopping 12 hours of campaigne... impressive. Most shooters hold 4-6 hours of gameplay...
Winning Winner?
Again, there isn't one... yet. For opinion, you decide.
Grogulus's Opinion
Now it wouldn't be fair to stop there if I didn't have one. There are things that I feel should be thought about logically. So here it goes... In my opinion, if Infinity Ward doesn't support their own game after release, as before, then Battlefield will win me. Rock hiding, out of map, unbalanced killstreaks and weapons... sound familiar? To this day, you can still wall jump (glitch) through the environments in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare...and yes, I checked (Xbox 360). Don't get me wrong, fell absolutely in love with COD at that game, however was disappointed with MW2 because Infinity Ward seemed more worried about too many cool new features to add without a thought of balance. It's a little sad to say that I did better the 2nd day playing COD: Black Ops than I ever did when playing MW2; that's a full year! Just on an opinionated side-note: Black Ops is more balanced... you earn killstreaks with your own kills (not with killstreaks), no unlimited marathon/lightweight knife-runners with tactical knife, and haven't seen many super rediculous glitching people kill me. Treyarch has redeemed themselves.
As far as Battlefield 3 goes, I enjoyed Bad Company 2... however, the controls took me forever to get used to. It felt clunky. The button layout wasn't what bothered me, but the feel of moving your character. I love the way COD games seem very fluid and precise. So I hope the new gaming engine comes with less clunky controls. To continue, Battlefield 3 has 12 minutes of footage... real first person action. MW3 just has some squigly lines (teaser) and theatre controlled camera views (reveal) with maybe a second of FPS reloading action. Again, Infinity Ward needs to show more solid material before I even consider twitter comments about how it's going to blow Battlefield 3 out of the water. Also, let's see if MW3 can surpass the claimed 12 hour campaign.
